The Starfish Story
A philosopher sat on a hill overlooking the ocean. Below, on the shore, a young man was engaged in what appeared to be a dance.
Intrigued, the philosopher left his spot to investigate. He approached the man to inquire as to the nature of his ritual.
"The shore is filled with starfish brought here by the tide. Left here, they will die. So I am throwing the starfish beyond the breakwaters where they can live," the young man said.
The philosopher was amused by the futility of this exercise. "Sir, there are thousands and thousands of starfish here. How can you possibly make a difference?"
Unfazed by this assessment, the young man bent over, picked up another starfish and returned it to the sea.
"Made a difference to that one," he said.
